turned into an artificial island. Today the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre holds numerous trade fairs, exhibitions, meetings, conventions and other events throughout the year. The huge glass windows and enormous aluminium roof of the centre represents a seabird in the process of raising its wings to fly. The Exhibition site and Bauhinia Square, which lies next to it, was the venue for the handover of Hong Kong from Britain to China in 1997.
Pacific Place
For shopoholics, the stunning Pacific Place shopping centre near the Admiralty Centre and Admiralty MTR station in Wan Chai represents a shopper`s paradise. Pacific Place opened in 1990 and its` lower floors contain a huge number of shops, restaurants, cafes and fast food restaurants. In addition, the lower floors also contain an ice skating rink and four cinemas specialising in English language films. The upper floors contain mainly businesses and hotels.
Other sites worth seeing in Wan Chai include Hong Kong`s famous electric trams which date back to 1925. The trams run through the Western District, Central, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay.
