Getting Around Hong Kong
Hong Kong has one of the most well organized and efficient transport systems and most areas of Hong Kong can easily be reached by tram, mass transit railway, Kowloon Canton Railways, ferries, taxis or by bus.
Octopus Card
The backbone of the Hong Kong transport system is the Octopus Card. The Octopus card is a smart card similar to London`s Oyster card. The Octopus card has been in operation since 1997 and allows travellers to receive discount rates on the Mass Transit Railway (MTR), the Kowloon Canton Railways (KCR), some trams and certain bus routes. The card can also be used in a variety of different ways such as buying goods at some convenience stores, shops and food outlets. The Octopus card can be bought in various denominations such as $100 or $150 and a refundable $50 is also required. Each time the card is used, the amount available on the card is reduced and the remaining balance appears at the exit gates. Octopus cards can be topped up at numerous outlets including MTR, KCR and various shops and food outlets.
Star Ferry
The Star Ferry is one of the highlights for anyone visiting Hong Kong and has been in service since 1898. The Star Ferry links Tsim Sha Tsui with Central District and also Wan Chai. Fares are extremely low, for such spectacular views, ranging from HK $2.20 for the upper deck and HK $1.70 for the lower deck. From the Central ferry piers, ferries can also be taken to some of the outer islands including Cheung Chau, Lantau, Peng Chau & Lamma.
